Entertainment permit types for your event
See permit types for temporary events with entertainment or amplified sound.
Permit types
1. JAM or "Just Add Music" Permit - outdoor spaces only
Permit program ends March 31, 2023.
During the pandemic emergency, you need this permit to provide entertainment or amplified sound at an outdoor space. This could be at a Shared Spaces, street closure, or other outdoor location. The permit is free.
2. One Time Indoor Entertainment Permit
You need this permit to host an indoor temporary event with live entertainment at a business establishment. You can also use this permit to extend the hours of entertainment at a place that already has a POE or LLP permit.
3. Sound Truck Permit
You need this permit to use amplified sound equipment on a vehicle, float, or other moving object outdoors.
4. Circus Permit
For a circus, contact us at entertainment.commission@sfgov.org to request permit application instructions.
Other activities and locations
We do not issue permits for activity taking place on the following properties. Contact those agencies directly to apply.
- SF Recreation and Parks property, like Golden Gate Park, Civic Center Plaza, or Dolores Park
- State property, like Angel Island
- Federal property, like Crissy Field or Ocean Beach (Golden Gate National Recreation Area), SF Maritime National Historical Park, Fort Mason, or the Presidio
- Residential property
You don’t need an entertainment permit for:
- Indoor pre-recorded music that doesn’t involve a live performer, like a song playlist or a jukebox.
- An unamplified solo performer that’s performing indoors at a business..
- A bullhorn of 10 watts or less that’s used by a pedestrian outdoors.
