Special cases

If you use an ambulance

If you used an ambulance to get medical care, you can expect to get 3 different bills:

  • Ambulance bill
  • Physician's bill from SFGH medical group
  • Facility bill from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital

Look for contact information on your billing statement.

View the hospital's prices

A hospital's "charge master" is its list of prices for every service, test, and operation they offer.

It is used to create the bill that you or the insurance company has to pay.

The prices in the charge master are usually higher than what you actually pay. That is because insurance companies and other people can negotiate the price down.

The most current list of prices can be found on State of California Department of Health Care Access Information (HCAI).

If you have questions about information in the charge master, call:

  • Patient Financial Services

Your rights in California

In California, the Payer’s Bill of Rights requires that every hospital:

  • Make a copy of its charge master available to the public
  • Give a list when someone asks for their:
    • 20 most common procedures or services
    • 5 room and bed rates

To follow California law, a hard copy of the San Francisco General Hospital charge master is also available at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
