CCHP Nutrition Screening
For children ages 3 to 5
What to know
What is it:
The CCHP nutrition screening checks children for healthy weights and nutrition. We measure your child's height and weight to calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI). This helps detect children who may be overweight or underweight. We also measure the carotenoids in your child's skin, using a device call a "Veggie Meter®." This can reflect how many vitamins a child is getting from fruits and vegetables. These screening results create a record of your child's growth to ensure they are healthy.
How it's done:
- The CCHP Health Worker leads a circle time for the children about healthy foods and exercise.
- The Health Worker, or another member of our team, measures the children's weight and height.
- We use these numbers to determine their BMI percentiles.
- We then use a device called a "Veggie Meter®" to measure fruit and vegetable intake.
- Your child puts their finger into the Veggie Meter®.
- Light shines through the skin to measure carotenoid levels. Carotenoids are nutrients found in fruits and vegetables.
- This scan is fast, easy, and doesn't hurt.
- Parents/guardians receive these screening results and information on ways to stay healthy.
- If a child needs a nutrition referral, CCHP can provide extra consultation.
- We provide this nutrition screening twice per year.
