Get ready for your Civil Service Commission appeal hearing

If you filed an appeal and received notice of your hearing date, learn what to expect from your hearing and how to prepare.

Before your hearing

Ask to change the hearing date (if you need to)

You can ask to delay your hearing (also called requesting a postponement). You can also ask for the hearing to take place after business hours (after 5 pm) if you have to work.

Ask for a delay

Prepare and submit documents that will support your case

You may have letters, emails, contracts, photos, or other documents you want to share with the Commission. Keep in mind that there are strict deadlines for submitting documents.

Prepare your documents

Make sure you know the time, date, and location of your hearing

Check the letter or email you received. Civil Service Commission hearings usually take place at:
City Hall - Room 400
1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place
San Francisco, CA 94102

Dress professionally

There's no dress code, but you may want to dress in business clothes.

When the meeting starts

Check the meeting agenda

Your hearing will be part of a bigger meeting. The Commission will also listen to appeals from other people. Find out where your hearing is on the agenda, so you're prepared.

Turn off your phone ringer, pager, and other devices

If any of your electronic devices make noise during the meeting, you may be told to leave.

Make any requests at the very start of the meeting (during the public comment agenda item)

For example, you can ask to have your hearing delayed to another day. You can also ask to move your hearing to a different spot in the agenda. The Commission will make the final decision.

During your hearing

Introduce yourself

When it's time for your hearing, say and spell your name. Tell the Commissioners why you filed the appeal.

Explain your case and answer questions

You may want to bring notes with you. If you submitted any documents as evidence, explain how they support your case. Be ready for the Commissioners to ask questions.

At the end of the hearing

The Commissioners will decide whether they agree with you and uphold your appeal. They may recommend a different course of action between you and the department. The Commission's decisions are final and have the force and effect of law.

Once the hearing is over, we will mail you a Notice of Action that puts the final decision in writing. We'll send it to the department too. The minutes will also be posted on our website.
