Information on construction projects during the coronavirus pandemic

Construction projects may continue if all work follows required safety protocols. 

This includes public works, public facilities, commercial, residential, and mixed-use projects, as well as remodel and renovation work.  

The state order allows workers to leave home to support the construction, operation, inspection, and maintenance of construction sites and construction projects, workers who support the supply chain of building materials, and workers who provide services that enable repair materials and equipment for essential functions.

If you are doing work on your own current residence, alone or only with members of your own household, your project may continue. A safety protocol is not required.

We require that all other construction sites follow safety protocols depending on the size of the project.

Small construction projects include:

• Residential projects with 10 units or fewer for any single-family, multi-family, senior, student, or other residential construction, renovation, or remodel project 
• Commercial projects consisting of 20,000 square feet of floor area or less, including any construction, renovation, or tenant improvement project
• Mixed-use projects that meet both of the specifications for residential and commercial projects
• All other construction projects not subject to the Large Construction Project Safety Protocol

Large construction projects include:

• Residential projects with more than 10 units for any single-family, multi-family, senior, student, or other residential construction, renovation, or remodel project.
• Commercial projects consisting of more than 20,000 square feet of floor area for any construction, renovation, or tenant improvement project.
• Essential Infrastructure construction with five or more workers at the jobsite at any one time.

1. Get the worker to leave the jobsite and get medical care. They will need to isolate at home.
2. Sanitize any surfaces at each place the worker was at.
3. Call the Department of Public Health at 415-554-2830. We will ask you information about:
   • Jobsite (address, project name, general contractor contact information)
   • Worker who tested positive (name, date of birth, city, date tested positive, date last worked, and subcontractor information if applicable)
   • Contact information for worker’s close contacts (if available, so they can quarantine at home for 14 days)
